Into the Woods by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim is a musical adaptation of several fairy tales combined into one story. Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack, Rapunzel, the Witch, and the Baker and his Wife journey into the woods to get what they want most. While the first act ends happily ever after, the second act explores the consequences of getting what you want, which does not always end happily.

My design for the set includes three scenes. Scene one depicts the homes of the Baker and his wife (house right), Jack and his mother (center), and Cinderella and her step mother and sisters (house left), where action takes place simultaneously. The second scene is the woods, where most of the musical is set. The third scene is Rapunzel’s tower, where the Witch visits her. I chose to give the scenery a dark, moody atmosphere to underscore the show’s more mature themes in the second act.
